Many who visit Italy often go no further south than Rome on their travels. Other than perhaps the Amalfi Coast, southern Italy has long been overlooked by American tourists. Truly one of the most beautiful areas of Italy, although not as economically developed as its cousins to the north, southern Italy has a lot to offer.
In particular, my home region of Basilicata – with its volcanic beaches, variegated landscape and amazingly friendly inhabitants – possesses a raw beauty that captivates you immediately. Also well known for its Aglianico wines, Basilicata offers some of the most wholesome and genuine cuisine in all of Italy. I spend a good part of every summer vacation in Basilicata every year and it is truly wonderful!
